Winter sea kayaking
Winter kayak tours
The late fall and winter months are some of the best seasons to kayak around Tromsø. The water is crystal clear, the air is crisp and clean and the early afternoon sunsets are beyond beautiful. It begins with the bright colors of fall, with white tipped peaks, untill the landscape is covered in white.
In the darkest period from the middle of november to end of january we are all about polar nights with the stars twinkling 24 hours a day.
Together we suit up in drysuits and stay warm kayaking our way in the sounds, islands and archipelagos surrounding Tromsø. Often a seal or two will curiously show up by our side and follow us for a while. If luck is on our side we might find ourselves in a flock of orcas that pass regularly through the sounds.
1. Oktober – 1. May
A little challenging. If you are looking for a unique arctic adventure and like being out in the winter you will be amazed.
Meeting point: The Sommarøy Adventure activity centre by appointment.
We make time to go ashore for a break, to light a fire and warm up with hot drinks and snacks. This is a guided tour and you do not need previous experience to join us. A safety briefing and introduction to winter sea kayaking will be given before setting out. On our winter tours we paddle sturdy double kayaks, but you may paddle singles on request if you can document sufficient kayaking skills. The guide will pick a location according to the weather and sea conditions to make sure you have a safe trip.
This is a weather dependant tour and we may cancel due to safety reasons. If the weather does not play on our side we go out and explore the archipelago by boat as an alternative.
